The experiment project “The Sand Engine” is intended as a natural form of coastal management to keep beaches and dunes at a safe width of the sea.
In the past, the beach from Hoek van Holland to Scheveningen was relatively narrow and required regular additions of sand.
This has been solved by an artificially created sandbar of 21.5 million m3, in the shape of a peninsula. The weather conditions (waves, wind and water) ensure that this sand spreads across the coastal area from Hoek van Holland to Scheveningen.
The more than 20 million m3 of sand, which is intended as a natural coastal manager, has the additional advantage of creating an inland water. Which is ideal for (learning) kite surfing.
Despite the fact that the Sand Motor is an experiment by Rijkswaterstaat, it has also been liked by Kitesurfing Netherlands.

In the lagoon, kite surfers are not bothered by high waves or currents. However, the lagoon is connected to the sea, which results in the supply and discharge (ebb and flow) of water.
The sand engine is also one of the safest kitesurfing locations, as the lagoon is surrounded by a sandbar.
As soon as something goes wrong with your kite, board, bar, lines, etc., you will eventually wash back to the beach.
In the period from April to October, kite surfing fanatics can do their thing here. We give kite surfing lessons on the sand engine from the end of March to the end of October.
The real “die-hards” who just go on kite surfing in the winter period, this location is also at their disposal.
Don't you like flat water? Then walk 50m further and you can go wild in the waves of the sea.
Because the sand engine is a lagoon surrounded by sand, it doesn't matter where the wind comes from in terms of safety. (read: as soon as you go to sea with an easterly wind, this can cause problems with drifting).
However, as soon as the wind comes from the east, he gets very gusty and is not relaxed for kite surfing.
When the wind comes from harvesting (i.e. over the land), the houses, dunes, obstacles, etc. ensure that the wind is super turbulent.
The gusts of wind often come through the air like a rocket, making kite surfing quite difficult.
The best wind you can have on the sand engine is wind from South West to North, then the wind comes from the sea and is not affected by obstacles that disturb the wind. A stable wind for a mega cool kitesurf session.
Thanks to the flat and calm water of the Sand Motor, students quickly gain a sense of self-confidence. The edge of the Sand Motor is equipped with a strip of shallow water. Controlling the kite in the shallows ensures that these skills are mastered at a top level.
The middle of the Sand Motor is about 2 to 3 meters deep and gives you a feeling that you are really in the deep water. But don't panic, because you're not out in the open sea. If there is a sense of unrest among the student, they do not have to worry because they will eventually wash up on the beach again.
Learning to kite surf on the sea requires just a little more energy, here we have to deal with currents and waves. But beware! Once you can kite surf on the sea, you can really do it anywhere. Then the flat water of the sand engine is a Peace of Cake!!
