Kite surfing is an extreme sport and by far the coolest water sport there is. But how do you start kite surfing? Where can you learn it and how long does it take before you can actually kite? You can read it all in this blog.
First of all, it is very important that if you want to learn kitesurfing, it is advisable to look for a certified kitesurfing school, they will give you the right (and, above all, the safest) push. Better safe than sorry!
Most students are complete newbies, they have never flown a kite, stood on a board or done other water sports.
That is why we always start with a trainer kite first, this is a small 2 line kite that teaches you the principles of ultimately being able to control the large kite.
A standard beginner course is divided into 3 steps, namely:
Step 1 of learning to kite surf
Being able to control the kite on the beach flawlessly; raising it, lowering it, controlling it from left to right and even controlling the kite with one hand.
Step 2 of learning to kite surf
Body dragging in the water, you are pulled by the power of the kite.
Step 3 of learning to kite surf
Real kite surfing. This consists of making a water start, where you really go kite surfing for the first few meters. But in most cases, it's water starting, starting water and starting water again and finally sailing left and right.
The average number of hours it takes for a student to become an independent kite surfer is approximately 12 hours.
Most people can then sail left and right and make a controlled stop.
You don't have to be a complete bodybuilder to be able to handle the power of the kite. You don't even have to be in top shape. But with a certain level of fitness, you will progress faster and be able to stay on the water longer, which is ultimately the most satisfying.
As soon as you are really stuck with the kite, this can be experienced as scary for some people, even after watching certain youtube videos about kitesurfing crashes. (so don't watch 😉)
But with a certified instructor, you are in good hands and can be confident that he will make you feel at ease, step by step, the most important safety aspects are covered.
A swimsuit or bikini is enough ;-).
If you sign up to a kite surfing school, they will take care of the rest. A kite surfing school knows exactly what size kite you need to go on the water. You will receive a suitable wetsuit, a harness around your waist and any shoes around your feet.
Short and to the point...YES!! And we don't just say that so that you book a lesson with us ;-)
We are dealing with the laws of nature. Mother nature should not be underestimated in this regard. After all, she can be relentless at certain times, and then it is very nice to have an instructor next to you who knows exactly what he is doing.
The instructor builds your confidence slowly. You will learn the ins and outs of the various safety systems. So you also know exactly what to do when things (threaten) go wrong. Everything is aimed at ensuring that you quickly become an independent and responsible kite surfer. Not only for your own safety, but also for that of other kite surfers and casual passers-by on the beach. Still awkward when you accidentally behead someone with your 21-meter lines attached to your kite.
Without the guidance of an instructor, you are a danger to yourself but also to others, on the water and on the beach. (trust me... you don't want this!!).
Your instructor will make the final decision to “let go” of you and certify you as an independent kite surfer.
However, are you still not completely convinced of your abilities? Then it is advisable to take that confidence to a higher level with your instructor for a few more hours.
From level 3J (IKO), the instructor will have enough confidence in you so that you can go out on the water alone, and if you are ready, your goal will be reached and you will be the independent kite surfer🎉
By the way, when you show your level 3J* certificate, you can also rent kitesurfing gear worldwide.
